.
The coastal community of Marina del Rey, California is located in the center of Los Angeles’ Westside between Venice Beach and Playa del Rey, four miles north of Los Angeles International Airport.
.
Prior to its development as a small craft harbour, the land occupied by Marina del Rey was a salt-marsh frequented by duck hunters. The area was most often referred to as mud flats.
.
In the mid-19th century, Moye C. Wicks and Louis Mesmer thought of turning this Playa del Rey estuary into a commercial port. But bankruptcy put paid to that idea!
.
Later, Moses Sherman (who used to be a teacher) purchased 1,000 acres of land and renamed the area “Del Rey”.
.
Nowadays, Marina del Rey is an affluent community with a population was 8,866. The dominant feature is the Marina, the world’s largest man-made small craft harbour with 19 marinas with capacity for 5,300 boats and is home port to approximately 6,500 boats.

Like so many towns on the Adriatic, Monopoli's history has been thoroughly influenced by its east-facing position and its fortified sea-front walls and castle tell many a story.
Parking in or around Piazza XX Settembre, location of a colourful street market, head east towards the cathedral. To find it just look upwards and you are sure to see its elegantly conceived bell tower thrusting into the sky. Built in 1693, the tower is over 60 metres high, completely dominating the town below.
